SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Forward Ryan Shaw and midfielder Derrick Thomas each scored and the Aggies capitalized on a lapse by the Coyote defense as UC Davis captured a 3-1 victory over Cal State, San Bernardino in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer game in front of 150 fans at Coyote Field Friday.

With the victory, UC Davis improves to 9-3-1 on the season, 5-3 in CCAA play while Cal State, San Bernardino drops its fifth straight and falls to 6-6-1, 3-6-1 in conference action.

UC Davis got on the board first just past the midpoint of the first half when Shaw notched his team-leading ninth goal of the season. His shot, which deflected off a Coyote defender and found its way into the goal, gave UC Davis the 1-0 lead. In the 68th minute, Thomas increased the margin as he knocked in a cross from the left corner by Jeremy Warner for the 2-0 advantage.

The Aggies would make it 3-0 just four minutes later, but it was the San Bernardino defense that put the score on the board. UC Davis' shot was blocked by a Coyote defender. As he tried to head it away, the ball deflected into the goal, making the score 3-0.

The Coyotes broke through in the 87th minute as Steve Morales took a pass from Matt Stevenson and beat Aggie keeper Jake Martini for his first goal of the season. CSUSB would have its chances in the game, but could not capitalize. In the first half, Jason Koza found himself in a one-on-one situation with Aggie starting goalkeeper Nic Platter but his chip shot attempt sailed over the crossbar.

For the game, UC Davis was outshot, 13-10, but held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Platter played the first 81 minutes and recorded three saves while Martini, seeing his first action of the season, notched two saves.

The Aggies are next in action on Sunday when they visit Cal Poly Pomona in an 11 a.m. matchup.
