NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Freshman Matt Sheldon gave the UC Davis men's soccer team a 1-0 lead in the 71st minute, then hit the golden goal game winner in overtime to give the Aggies a 2-1 win against Cal State Northridge at Matador Soccer Field in Northridge.

UC Davis improves to 5-6-2 on the year and 3-2 in the Big West Conference while Cal State Northridge drops to 6-6-1 overall and 3-2 in league play.

The result created a three-way tie for second place in the Big West Conference standings as Cal State Northridge, UC Davis and Cal Poly all have nine points. UC Irvine, which played Creighton in a non-conference matchup, sits atop the standings with 12 points.

The goals were the first of Sheldon's career. He is the first Aggie to score twice in one game since Chris Leer accomplished the feat in a 2-0 win over Cal Poly on Oct. 31, 2009.

The Aggies took only seven shots in the game, but struck with accuracy as four of the shots were on goal.

Dan Reese nearly put UC Davis on the board in the 33rd minute when a long throw in found the junior. His shot from the top of the box forced Cal State Northridge goalkeeper Michael Abalos to punch the ball out of danger.

As the second half got underway, both teams remained scoreless until midway through when Sheldon found the back of the net in the 71st minute. Cal State Northridge turned the ball over in the Aggies' half of the field and it was collected by Reese who used a fast break to push the ball far up the field. He passed it over to a waiting Sheldon whose shot landed in the top right corner of the goal.

Less than 10 minutes later, Cal State Northridge hit the equalizer after the Matadors were awarded a corner kick in the 78th minute. Yarden Azulay served the ball in and Chris Smith's flick found Edwin Rivas, who placed his shot into the lower right corner to tie the game at 1-1.

With the first overtime period underway, Sheldon sealed the win for the Aggies with his second goal of the night and of his career. The Matador defense turned over the ball in the penalty box, and Sheldon's point blank shot gave UC Davis the 2-1 win.

UC Davis goalkeeper Omar Zeenni held off 20 shots from Cal State Northridge, including 12 in the second half. He recorded five saves.

The Aggies will remain on the road for a conference game at UC Irvine on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.
