UC Irvine struck first with a goal from Lester Hayes III in the 27th minute. The play started with Tarek Morad's header to Christian Hernandez who flicked the ball on to a waiting Hayes. After a breakaway run, Hayes put the shot away to give the Anteaters a 1-0 lead.

Schulte's game-tying goal came in the 59th minute off a service from Alex Aguiar. From 35 yards out, Aguiar sent the ball into the box and Schulte headed it past UC Irvine goalkeeper Andrew Fontein to tie the score at one goal apiece.

UC Davis continued to take shots, peppering the UC Irvine goal with five attempts in less than 10 minutes. Alex Henry's shot in the 66th minute was saved by Fontein, while Tony Rascon missed high in the 70th minute. Aguiar had an attempt blocked in the 73rd minute while a Matt Sheldon header off a corner kick from Henry was picked off by Fontein less than a minute later.

The Anteaters responded late in the game with a Christopher Santana attempt in the 83rd minute that was saved by Zeenni and a header shot from Juan Gutierrez that missed wide.

A final attempt by Schulte at the 89:13 mark was saved by Fontein and the game would go into overtime.
