ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -
Sophomore Benjamin Swatez converted a 20-yard shot from the middle of the field in the 79th minute on Saturday afternoon as UC Davis rallied from a 1-0 deficit to beat Sonoma State 2-1 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer game at Rohnert Park.
Ryan Shaw, who assisted on Swatez's game-winning goal, scored in the 67th minute to tie the contest for UC Davis, which improved to 8-3-4 overall and 7-3-2 in the CCAA. The Seawolves got their only score from Kai Edwards, falling to 7-9-2 overall and 4-6-2 in league.
The teams battled without a goal in the first half before Edwards delivered on a header just 32 seconds into the second half on a long cross from Chris Giuliacci. However, Shaw answered 21 minutes later, taking a short pass from Swatez and converting into the lower right part of the net. Yuta Tanaka was also credited with an assist on the play.
Tied 1-1 going into the final part of the game, Swatez scored from 20 yards in front of the goal, giving the Aggies' the eventual game-winning goal.
Both teams managed 13 shots in the game with the Seawolves holding an 8-4 advantage in the second half. Nic Platter had two saves and allowed one goal, while Charles Warne took over for the final 30:42 and also had two saves.
