SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Dan Reese put away a shot from 15 yards out in the 63rd minute to get the UC Davis men's soccer team to within one goal, but Luis Silva scored for UC Santa Barbara in the 76th minute and the Gauchos held off the Aggies to take a 3-1 win on Wednesday in Santa Barbara.
UC Davis drops to 7-7-2 overall and are 5-3 in the Big West Conference while UC Santa Barbara improves to 10-5-1 on the year and 3-4 in league play.
The Aggies are now in sole possession of second place in the Big West with 15 points after UC Irvine and Cal State Northridge played to a 0-0 tie. UC Irvine stays at the top of the standings with 16 points while UC Riverside, which tied Cal State Fullerton, is in third place with 11 points.
The loss snaps UC Davis' three-game winning streak while UC Santa Barbara broke its two-game losing skid.
In the 37th minute, Tim Pontius put UCSB up 1-0 after connecting on a free kick from Luis Silva. Silva sent the kick into the penalty box and the ball bounced to Pontius who shot to the right side and scored.
Pontius gave the Gauchos a 2-0 advantage in the 61st minute after he found UC Davis goalkeeper Omar Zeenni and launched a shot from 61 yards out. The high, arching kick landed in the back of the net and UCSB took a two-goal lead.
UC Davis began to stage their comeback when, only two minutes later, Matt Wiesenfarth found Reese on a fast break and fed him the ball. The junior answered with a shot from 15 yards out to the left side of the goal to cut the Gaucho lead in half.
The Gauchos, however, would seal the win with a goal from Luis Silva, his 11th of the year. Sam Garza passed the ball to Silva who took a low shot from inside the box and scored to give UC Santa Barbara the 3-1 win.
Reese led the Aggies offensively with two shots while Pontius and Garza each took three attempts for the Gauchos.
UC Davis returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 2 for a Senior Day matchup against Cal State Fullerton. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Aggie Soccer Field in Davis.
