Senior Jared Ramsey scored two goals and the Aggies scored their most goals since the 2000 season as UC Davis defeated San Francisco State, 6-1, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer game Wednesday afternoon at Cox Stadium.
With the win, UC Davis improves to 12-5-1 on the season, 8-5 in CCAA play while the Gators drop to 5-14, 4-9 in conference action.
Ramsey put the Aggies ahead for good early as in the 13th minute he deposited a free kick into the right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead. UC Davis would add to its lead in the 26th minute when senior midfielder Eli Carter had a breakaway goal after receiving a pass from Ryan Shaw. Senior forward Jesse Swonetz closed out the scoring in the first half when he beat Gator keeper Russell Miller following a Miller turnover in the 39th minute.
In the second half, the Aggies continued to apply pressure as Ramsey scored his second in the 60th minute following a pass in front of the goal from Derrick Thomas. Ten minutes later, the Aggies leading scorer, sophomore Ryan Shaw, scored his 12th goal of the season off a crossing pass from defender Brian Flynn. Flynn and sophomore Jeff Hull would assist freshman defender Darren Hammond of UC Davis' final goal in the 88th minute.
San Francisco State's lone goal came in the 71st minute when Paul Carter assisted on Shawn Fadden first goal of the season.
For the game, the Aggies outshot the Gators, 17-9, and held a 10-7 edge in corner kicks. The Aggies goalkeeping duo of Nick platter and Jake Martini posted one save as Platter went the first 65:47 of the game, not allowing a goal. For SFSU, Miller stopped four shots on the afternoon.
UC Davis will conclude its regular season this Saturday when it travels to Chico State for a 5 p.m. meeting against the Wildcats.
