DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Chris Leer scored in the 24th minute, then followed with another goal in the 48th minute to lead the UC Davis men's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over Cal Poly Saturday at Aggie Soccer Stadium.

With the win, UC Davis moves to 6-12-1 overall and 3-5-1 in Big West play while Cal Poly, who was tied with UC Santa Barbara atop the conference standings, falls to 8-9-1 overall and 6-3-0 in the Big West.

Leer and the Aggies struck first with a goal in the 24th minute. Freshman Riley Newport fired a shot from 15 yards out which Cal Poly goalkeeper Patrick McLain deflected the shot. Leer, however, was on hand to one-touch the deflection past McLain and into the lower right corner to score his third goal of the season.

As play continued in the first half, the Aggie offense stayed powerful, posting eight shots in the period. Cal Poly found their first shot of the game when Daniel Cumming tried to head the ball in off a corner kick from Jacob Hustedt, but the ball sailed wide.

UC Davis struck again early in the second half when fellow senior Paul Marcoux found a streaking Leer in the middle of the field. Marcoux slipped a pass to Leer who took a touch, then sent a shot into the lower right corner from eight yards out.

In the 64th minute, Michael Garrick pushed the ball toward the goal when McLain came out to block the shot attempt. The two players collided and freshman Jacob Barron found himself with the ball and an open net, but miskicked and sent the ball over the top of the goal.

Later in the game, Leer nearly had a hat trick. In the 69th minute, he took a shot, which McLain deflected but could not recover from. Leer and a Cal Poly defender sprinted towards the ball as it rolled toward the open net, but the defender was able to clear it before it crossed the goal line.

In the final minutes of the game, Cal Poly turned up their offense in an attempt to score, but could not find the back of the net. Cumming and David Zamora had back-to-back tries in the 70th minute, but Cumming's shot was blocked while Zamora's was high.

UC Davis recorded 18 shots while Cal Poly had only seven, six of which came in the second half.

McLain finished with three saves while redshirt freshman Matt Provencher had one save for the Aggies in 90 minutes of action.

UC Davis will close out the regular season Saturday, Nov. 7 at UC Santa Barbara in a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
