SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
UC Davis junior Matt Sheldon netted his team-high fifth score of the season midway through the second half, but a late equalizer by host UC Santa Barbara forced overtime and the Aggies battled the No. 14 Gauchos to a 1-1 draw in from of 2,407 fans at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif., on Saturday night.
Although UC Davis picks up a point in the standings with the tie, the Aggies remained winless in their last four-straight contests (0-2-2), falling to 6-8-3 overall and 2-4-2 in Big West Conference play. UC Santa Barbara moved to 11-4-2 overall with the draw and remained unbeaten in league play at 6-0-2, extending its unbeaten streak to nine consecutive matches.
UC Davis retained possession of the third and final playoff spot in the North Division with the draw, but fell three points back of second place Cal Poly (and a host's role for the first round) heading into next week's home finale against the Mustangs on Wednesday (Nov. 6) at 2 p.m. -- a match originally scheduled for 3 p.m.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half, each packing the defensive third and combining for just five shots (3-2 in favor of the Aggies) and 30 fouls in a rough-and-tumble opening period. Both teams found a groove offensively in the second half (14 combined shots) before Sheldon got UC Davis on the board first in the 71st minute.
On the counterattack, redshirt freshman Dashiell MacNamara took control of a rebound and crossed a ball through the box to a waiting Sheldon, who fired into the open net for the, 1-0, lead.
The advantage did not last for long, however, as the Gauchos struck for the tying score 11 minutes later in the 82nd minute as Goffin Boyoko sent a ball down the right wing to teammate Kevin Garcia-Lopez, who served a ball to the back post where it was headed home by Charlie Miller to make it a 1-1 contest. It was Miller's third score of the season.
That set the stage for a pair of overtime periods where UC Santa Barbara held a 4-2 advantage in shots, but neither team found the back of the net. Sheldon had the Aggies' best chance to end it with a header at the far post in the second overtime, but a diving save by keeper Josh McNeely preserved the draw.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Armando Quezada started in the place of Omar Zeenni, who was out serving a red card suspension, and made three saves in the draw. Sheldon, along with teammate Ryan Gross, finished with a team-high three shots while Miller took a match-high four attempts for UCSB.
The match produced a total of 54 fouls (28-26 in favor of UCSB), while the Gauchos held the advantage in both shots (14-11) and corner kicks (9-2).
