SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior Ryan Shaw's goal in the 78th minute broke a scoreless tie and gave the UC Davis Aggies a 1-0 victory over Sacramento State in a men's non-conference soccer match at Hornet Field Tuesday afternoon.

With the win the Aggies improve to 6-9-2 and defeat the Hornets for the second time this season. Sacramento State falls to 5-11-1. The game was a late addition to the schedule, after both teams had games canceled earlier in the season.

Shaw scored his ninth goal of the season off a pass from Gabe Garcia. Shaw was seven yards out from goal and struck the ball low to the near post, past Hornet goalkeeper Matt McDougall, who finished the match with two saves. It extended Shaw's school-record of 43 career goals.

Following Shaw's goal, the Hornets offense had two good scoring opportunities, including a low shot by junior midfielder Marco Ramirez that went just wide of the post in the closing seconds.

Sacramento State had the upper hand in chances, taking 12 shots compared to the Aggies' six, but UC Davis goalkeeper Charles Warne had a game-high four saves.

The match was littered with a total of seven yellow cards, UC Davis with four and Sacramento State with three. The teams also combined for a total of 38 fouls.

The teams also met earlier this season with the Aggies gaining a 2-1 victory at UC Davis.

UC Davis will conclude its 2004 season on Saturday when it travels to Los Angels to face No.13 UCLA. Gametime is et for 7 p.m.
