DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis head men's soccer coach Dwayne Shaffer announced, Wednesday, that nine high school soccer standouts have signed letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers with the Aggies beginning with the 2014 season.
"I am extremely excited about this recruiting class," Shaffer said. "I'd like to thank assistant coaches, Eric Mild and Jason Hotaling, for working hard to identify some great prospects and help put together a class made up of players that have the ability to be outstanding student-athletes at UC Davis and help us compete for a Big West Conference title."
Evan Barrett (Sacramento, Calif./Jesuit HS), Noah Wilson (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande HS), Lizandro Torres (Stockton, Calif./Lincoln HS), Miguel Acevedo (Pacoima, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS), Gregory Salazar (Long Beach, Calif./Cathedral HS), Marco Barragan (Santa Rosa, Calif./Piner HS), Derek Caro (South Lake Tahoe, Calif./South Lake Tahoe HS), Matt Baringer (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont HS), and Roy Boateng (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate HS), will join the Aggies next season.
"We've got excellent speed and technical players in the group, as well as adding some solid defenders to our roster," Shaffer added. "I believe all of these signees will have an opportunity to come in and compete for playing time right away and, it would be nice, if three or four of them earn a starting role."

EVAN BARRETT (5-8, 145, Wing, Sacramento, Calif./Jesuit HS/Sacramento United) Three-year varsity letter winner for the Marauders...one of 61 players named to the 2013 NSCAA High School All-America Team... One of 42 players selected to compete at the NSCAA High School All-American Soccer Game on Dec. 14 in Pennsylvania... scored 21 goals and finished with 16 assists in helping his team to a 26-1-3 overall record and a 10-0 mark in the Delta River League... CIF Sac-Joaquin Division Finalists in 2013, falling to Granite Bay HS in overtime in the championship match -- it's fifth-consecutive appearance in the finals... two-time All-Delta River League selection as a junior and senior... finished with 16 goals and 10 assists as a junior in helping the Marauders to a national No. 1 ranking by MaxPreps after completing a 27-1-1 season that included their third CIF Division I title in four years (10th overall).
Coach Shaffer: "Evan has been on our radar ever since the first time I saw him play. He is an extremely quick and fast winger who fits the style of soccer that we've developed here at UC Davis. He is great in 1-v-1 situations, dribbling at players, and getting behind defenses to cause havoc."
NOAH WILSON (5-11, 160, M/F, Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande HS/Marin FC) Three-year varsity letter winner for the Gauchos... an attacking midfielder who was named the Empire Large School Boys Soccer Player of the Year and North Bay League Player of the Year in 2013... three-time All-North Bay League selection his sophomore-senior seasons... three-time Offensive Player of the Year... North Bay League Player of the Year as a senior, finishing with 19 goals and nine assists... All-Marble Valley League honorable mention selection as a freshman in Vermont... finished with 40 career goals and 22 assists for the Gauchos... All-Emplre selection as a junior... helped the Gauchos to a section semifinal appearance as a senior and a trip to the quarterfinals as a junior... served as team captain of his Marin FC club team, helping his side to a second-place finish at the Northern California State Cup and the Surf Cup in 2013, while claiming the National Cup XII Western Regional title in 2013... LIZANDRO TORRES (6-2, 170, M, Stockton, Calif./Lincoln HS/Milan FC) Played three varsity seasons for the Trojans... three-time All-San Joaquin Athletic Association first-team selection... named league most valuable player as a junior, finishing with a prep career high 18 goals... two-time team Offensive MVP... finished his prep career with 41 career goals... helped his club team to a Surf Cup title and a No. 1 national ranking in 2012... Surf Cup finalists in 2013... two-time Dallas Cup participant in 2011-12... four-year member of the honor roll, including two semesters on the honor roll "with distinction."
Coach Shaffer: "Lizandro is a big, strong, player who is, technically, very good with a high soccer IQ. He can play a number of positions and I'm looking forward to plugging him into our midfield or up top for us."
MIGUEL ACEVEDO (6-1, 165, M/D, Pacoima, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS/CZ Elite) Entering his senior season for the Warriors in 2014 after spending his first two prep years at Community Charter Early College HS in Lakeview Terrace... member of the Cal South Olympic Development Program pool from 2010-13... helped his ODP side to a regional and national championship in 2013, scoring the game-winner in the championship match... helped his club team, CZ Elite, to a Surf Cup title in 2013 as well as a National Premier League crown and a 2010 state title.
Coach Shaffer: "Miguel is a great soccer player with a great soccer brain and great technique. He's a good leader with an opportunity to come in immediately and compete for us as a defender or in the midfield."
GREGORY SALAZAR (5-10, 170, D, Long Beach, Calif./Cathedral HS/FC Golden State) Currently entering his senior season for the Phantoms after helping lead his team to a 21-5-1 overall record, a Del Rey League title, and a trip to the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division IV tournament as a junior in 2013... played his freshman season at Wilson HS in Long Beach... two-time All-Del Rey League first-team honoree as a sophomore and junior... All-CIF Third-Team selection as a junior... Phantoms have won back-to-back Del Rey League titles in 2012 and 2013, advancing to the CIF semifinals in both years... advanced to the finals of the Dallas Cup with his club team FC Golden State... three-year honor roll member.
Coach Shaffer: "Greg is an excellent defender. He is a true left-footed player with very good speed. I'm looking forward to him competing for us as a left back."
MARCO BARRAGAN (5-5, 135, M/F, Santa Rosa, Calif./Piner HS/Atletico Santa Rosa) Four-year varsity letter winner for the Prospectors... All-Empire Large School Boys Soccer First-Team selection and Sonoma County League Player of the Year as a senior... All-Sonoma County League first-team selection as a junior... finished with 14 goals in 10 matches in his final prep season after finishing with 19 goals in 12 matches the year prior... helped his Atletico Santa Rosa club team to a third-place finish at the 2013 U.S. Soccer National Club Championships in Colorado, including handing the eventual champions from North Dakota their only loss of the tournament by a 6-0 score.
Coach Shaffer: "Marco is very similar to Evan Barrett. He is very quick off the dribble, technically very clean, and a handful for opposing defenses. He's great at running right at defenders with the ball."
DEREK CARO (5-10, 145, M, South Lake Tahoe, Calif./South Tahoe HS/Sagebrush SC) Two-year varsity letter winner in soccer as a freshman and senior, while also playing football (sophomore) and tennis (junior)... finished with 24 goals and 26 assists as a senior for the Vikings, helping them to a state title with a 23-1 overall record and a conference title... all-league and all-state first-team selection in his final prep season... all-league honorable mention choice as a freshman, finishing with eight goals and 12 assists... older brother, Ryan, is also a member of the UC Davis team... National Honor Society member.
Coach Shaffer: "Derek is another great, technically sound, soccer player with a high soccer IQ. He is a link player who likes to get the ball and keep it moving within the team. He's a very good passer and playmaker, who is also quick off the dribble."
MATT BARINGER (5-11, 160, F, Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont HS/Bay Oaks SC) Entering his senior season for the Highlanders... three-time All-WACC Shoreline First-Team selection... led the team in scoring as a freshman and sophomore... named team MVP as a junior, finishing with prep career high's of 11 goals and 12 assists... added 10 goals and seven assists as a sophomore and nine more goals and eight assists as a freshman.
Coach Shaffer: "Matt is another who is very similar to Evan (Barrett) and Marco (Barragan). He's a direct striker who has a knack for going at the goal. Has the ability to score goals, has very good pace, good size, and will be a welcome addition to our attack as a winger or a striker."
ROY BOATENG (6-1, 185, D, Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate HS/Santa Rosa United) A native of Accra, Ghana, who helped the Cougars to a berth in the North Coast Section quarterfinals and a 14-5-3 record in 2012... a four-year varsity letter winner, who had his senior season cut short due to injury... also played basketball and football as sophomore... helped his club team, Santa Rosa United, to a Cal-Cup title and a State Cup in 2013.
Coach Shaffer: "Roy is a big, strong, player who has very good presence on the field. Roy has been a striker for his entire career, but we envision him as a central defender for us."
