Aggies add size and power with six spring signees

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis men’s soccer head coach Dwayne Shaffer restocked his roster with a large class on on the first day of the NCAA’s early signing period on Wednesday, welcoming six high school and club standouts to the program.

Forward Emmanuel Doherty (El Sobrante, Calif. / Middle College HS), defender Max Glasser (Novato, Calif. / Marin Catholic HS), midfielder Nick Hyde (San Diego, Calif. / San Diego High School of International Studies), Connor Tipton (Sonora, Calif. / Sonora HS), and Jordon Vice (Foresthill, Calif. / Jesuit HS), are all California natives, while midfielder Whalen Shinn (Dallas, Texas / Plano West HS) will join redshirt Kyle Marcotte (Austin, Texas) as Texans on the roster.

“Collectively, I’m very excited about the group,” Shaffer said. “We added some great soccer players with a ton of talent, who are all really good technically and very good athletically. We added some much-needed size, strength, and power, back into the team, and we also added some exceptional speed and pace as well. I think it’s a a great group to reload with to replace the eight outstanding seniors that graduated from our program this past season.”

Brief bios on each of the signees follow.

The Aggies finished 11-7-3 overall and 7-2-1 in Big West Conference play during the 2017 campaign, winning the league’s north division title and reaching the championship match of the conference tournament for the second time in the program’s history. UC Davis finished the season unbeaten in its last five matches (4-0-1) and posted the most wins overall — and the third most in the program’s Division I history — since the 2008 squad finished 13-5-4 en route to a berth in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

EMMANUEL DOHERTY (6-4, 190, Forward, El Sobrante, Calif. / Middle College HS, Mustang SC)
Played three seasons for De Anza HS as a freshman, junior, and senior… Helped the Dons to a Tri-County Athletic League title as a freshman and a pair of CIF North Coast Section quarterfinal appearances as a freshman and junior… After scoring just once as a freshman, he finished with nine goals and five assists as a junior… As a senior, scoring 19 times and assisted on two others, earning league MVP and All-CIF first team honors… Played club soccer for the Mustang Soccer Club, helping his team to a Davis Legacy Soccer Tournament title in 2014 and a 2017 NHB Cup championship… Parents are Harry and Taiye and has an older sibling, Benjamin… Intends to major in neurobiology, physiology, and behavior, at UC Davis.

Coach Shaffer said: “We’ve known about Emmanuel for a while and are very impressed with his skills. He is a strong left-footed player who is very competitive and will see time competing on the left side for us.”

MAX GLASSER (5-10, 155, Defender, Novato, Calif. / Marin Catholic HS, Marin FC)
Played his sophomore and senior years for the Wildcats, while running track (200m and 400m) for four seasons… State qualifier in track as a sophomore and junior… Named the Marin County Athletic League Track Athlete of the Year… Plays club soccer for Marin FC, helping the squad to a No. 6 national ranking… Surf Cup champion in 2018 and a member of the NorCal Player Development Program… Ranks among the top 10 percent in his graduating class… Parents are Michael and Rebecca, and has a younger sister, Mia... Intends to major in biological sciences at UC Davis.

Coach Shaffer said: “Max is probably the single fastest player that we identified through the recruit process in Northern California. He is exceptionally fast and will compete for time as a fullback and/or a winger. He is a very tenacious defender with huge upside.”

NICK HYDE (6-4, 165, Midfielder, San Diego, Calif. / San Diego High School of International Studies, Bonita Rebels)
Has played three seasons for the Cavers, helping the team to a second-place Eastern League finish as a sophomore and a league title as a junior… Cavers advanced to the CIF section division III finals as a sophomore and the semifinals as a junior… Finished with five goals and 11 assists as a sophomore, earning first-team All-Eastern League honors, improving on that performance with nine goals and 15 assists as a junior, also earning first-team all-league honors… Named as a “Player to Watch” for 2017-18 by the San Diego Union-Tribune… Twice earned CIF Scholar-Athlete awards in 2017 and 2018… Plays club soccer for the Bonita Rebels, named to the Cal South ODP player pool… Ranks among the top 20 in his graduating class… Born in Hamburg, Germany, and speaks fluent German… Intends to major in chemical engineering with a minor in German… Parents are Craig and Britta and has two younger sister, Mara and Mia… Father played soccer for one season at U.S. International University (now Alliant International University) in San Diego and three seasons at UC San Diego, while also coaching professionally in both Germany and the United States.

Coach Shaffer said: “Nick is a center midfielder who can play as a six, an eight, or a 10. He covers a lot of ground and has great size and strength. Nick possesses a good soccer brain and excellent technique.”

WHALEN SHINN (6-4, 176, Midfielder, Dallas, Texas / Plano West HS ’18, Solar Soccer Club)
A two-time Texas District 6-6A all-district selection, earning first-team honors as a junior and second-team laurels as a sophomore… Named the district’s freshman of the year in 2014-15… Helped Plano West HS to a district and area championship in 2015-16, and earned a berth to the regional quarterfinals that season… Helped the Wolves to a second-place district finish in 2016-17 and an area finalist appearance in 2014-15… Plays club soccer for the Solar Soccer Club, qualifying for Region 3 Regionals and ranked in the top 15 in the country in each of the last four years… Speaks Spanish and Portuguese, training for three summers in Brazil with three different teams (Santos, Sao Paolo FC, and Portuguesa Santista)… Lived in Brazil for an entire year (2013-14), competing with Portuguesa Santista… Played in the 2014 World Futsal Cup for FC Barcelona’s Foundation Club in Spain and finished third at the 2016 World Futsal Cup with Juvenil U-19 City Futsal… Also won the 2015 and 2016 Disney World Futsal Championship in 2015 and 2016, and won the U12 and U14 Disney Junior Soccer Showcase titles in 2010 and 2012, respectively… Parents are Kelley and Shawn, and has an older sister Shelby, who attends Arizona State… Intends to major in environmental science with a minor in fine arts at UC Davis.

Coach Shaffer said: “Whalen is a very tall, athletic, center midfielder who has great technique and a good competitive spirit. He has excellent on-the-ball movement and is a very, very strong leader, who will add strength and power to the central midfield position during his career. His international experience gave him an opportunity to go another part of the world to learn a different soccer culture and he will bring some of that back to our program.”

CONNOR TIPTON (6-2, 175, Forward/Midfielder, Sonora, Calif. / Sonora HS, Galt FC Untited)
Did not play high school soccer, instead focusing his efforts with his club team, Galt FC United, scoring 40 goals and 14 assists over the last two seasons… Helped lead Galt FC United to a No. 1 national ranking from GotSoccer.com in 2017… Club team has won tournament titles at the 2017 Davis Legacy College Showcase, 2016 San Diego Surf College Cup, 2016 North Huntington Beach NHB Cup, and the 2016 Cal Cup… Also made the 2016 NPL Finals in Denver, Colo… Selected for the NorCal PDP/State program from 2013-17… Three-time winner of the Academic Block “S” Award (2015-17), ASB Leadership in 2017-18, and is among the top 15 percent of his graduating class… Also played basketball as a freshman, helping his team to a 22-0 record and a league title… Parents are Shane and Keri and has two younger siblings, Tyler and Paige... Intends to major in managerial economics at UC Davis.

Coach Shaffer said: “We are super excited about Connor. He was rated amongst many coaches as the top striker in Northern California after leading NorCal Premier in scoring. He has grown tremendously, he has great quality in his feet, and is an excellent goal scorer. He has great size and athleticism and a great nose for the goal. I see him competing as a center forward or second striker as a freshman.”

JORDON VICE (6-1, 165, Forward, Foresthill, Calif. / Jesuit HS ’18, Placer United)
Has played the last two seasons for the Marauders… Finished with eight goals and a team-high 10 assists as a junior in 29 matches, helping Jesuit HS to a 20-4-5 overall record, a Delta Valley League title, and a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section crown… As of signing day, has scored 25 goals and assisted on seven others as a senior, helping the team to an 18-3-1 overall record… Plays club soccer with Placer United and was invited to train with the Wolverhampton Wanderers' Youth Academy team in 2014… Also competed for the San Jose Earthquakes’ USSDA team for parts of his freshman and sophomore seasons… An honor roll selection every semester at Jesuit HS, has twice earned the school’s outstanding service award, and currently serves as vice president the German Heritage Club… Parents are Jay and Stacey, and he has two older siblings, Hannah and Alex… Intends to major in managerial economics at UC Davis.

Coach Shaffer said: “Jordon comes from one of the top club teams in Northern California and has been one of the team’s top scorers. He adds size, strength, pace, and power. He is a Sacramento native with great technique, great goal-scoring ability, and will compete as a striker and winger as an incoming freshman.”
