College Sports Madness Preseason All-Big West Conference Team

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior forward Matt Sheldon, along with defenders Brian Ford and Ramon Martin Del Campo, were named to the first team, while senior forward Matt Wiesenfarth added second-team laurels, as College Sports Madness announced its preseason All-Big West Conference men's soccer selections on Wednesday morning.

The Aggies' three first-team selections match Cal State Northridge for the most in the league, while their four overall honorees stand behind only the Matadors and UC Santa Barbara, which finished with five selections apiece.

Among a group of six starters returning for UC Davis, which opened its first day of practice on Wednesday morning, Sheldon and Wiesenfarth return to spearhead the Aggies' offense after sharing the team lead and ranking among the league leaders with six goals and 13 points overall as juniors in 2013. Both were all-conference honorees last season with Wiesenfarth earning a spot on the All-Big West second team and Sheldon named to the honorable mention squad.

On the back line, all-league selections Martin del Campo (honorable mention) and Ford (second team) stand tall as returning starters on a defense that ranked third in the Big West in both goals allowed (21) and goals against average (0.96) a season ago.

UC Davis opens its 2014 schedule with an exhibition against Chico State on Sunday (Aug. 24) at noon at the Aggie Soccer Field before officially lifting the lid on the regular season with a road trip to Columbus, Ohio, to take on host Ohio State and Canisius College at the ninth-annual Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic on Aug. 29-31.
