SCOUTING CSU BAKERSFIELD
Monday's game marks the season opener for CSU Bakersfield... The Roadrunners tied Cal 1-1 and defeated The Masters College 3-0 in preseason exhibition action.
Junior Gyasi Zardes has been named a preseason All-American by Soccer America, College Soccer News and CollegeSportsMadness.com and was the No. 1 selection in TopDrawerSoccer.com's preseason Top 100 Upperclassmen poll... He is also on the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list for 2012.
The Roadrunners finished the 2011 season with a 12-4-5 overall record and a 7-3 mark in MPSF play... Zardes led the team with 18 goals and two assists.
Senior midfielder Jesus Sanchez recorded 13 assists for the Roadrunners in 2011.
ALL-TIME AGAINST CSU BAKERSFIELD
UC Davis is 5-8-2 all-time against CSU Bakersfield after holding the Roadrunners to a 0-0 double overtime draw last year in Davis.
The Aggies last defeated the Roadrunners on Aug. 31, 2008 by a 1-0 decision in Davis.
"CSU Bakersfield has an excellent coach. Simon (Tobin) and I have known each other for years and competed against each other for years. I enjoy playing at their facility. They always have a nice crowd and he has an outstanding, veteran team."
"We're going to have to be prepared. They have the No. 1 rated pro prospect in Gyasi Zardes who is outstanding. We've got to contain him as well as Jesus Sanchez. They're going to be really good. It's their home opener at their place and hopefully we give them a good performance and make it difficult on them."
On Friday's win over UNLV: "UNLV was a very good opponent so for us to open the season with a win was huge for us. In the first half, we played outstanding and we could have had at least one goal. UNLV made some good adjustments in the second half and made the game slow down so much that it took us a little bit to get into the rhythm again. I felt like we stayed to our game plan and we looked good in the areas that we worked on all preseason."
UC DAVIS 1, UNLV 0 (AUG. 24)
Alex Aguiar scored in the 85th minute to give UC Davis a 1-0 victory over UNLV on Friday at Aggie Soccer Field.
Matt Sheldon recorded the assist after finding Aguiar trailing in the box... Aguiar one touched the pass into the goal.
The Aggie defense did not allow UNLV to take a shot in the first half.
Junior goalkeeper Omar Zeenni recorded two saves in the win.
Monday's game against CSU Bakersfield begins a four-game road trip for UC Davis, who will travel to games at Air Force (Aug. 31), at Denver (Spet. 2) and at San Francisco (Sept. 6).
The next Aggie home match is on Sept. 9 against UCF.
UC Davis will play 8-of-11 games on the road during Aug. and Sept.
Last season, UC Davis was 3-4-1 in road games.
Friday's win over UNLV marked the first season-opening victory for UC Davis since a 3-1 victory over Long Island on Aug. 29, 2008.
The Aggies have not lost their first home game of the season since the 2009 season when Washington claimed a 2-1 double overtime win.
AGGIES PICKED SECOND IN NORTH DIVISION
UC Davis was selected to finish second in the North Division in a preseason poll conducted by the league's coaches.
The Big West switched to a divisional alignment for the 2012 season after adding Sacramento State as an associate member in men's soccer.
UC Santa Barbara was unanimously selected to win the North Division while Cal Poly and Sacramento State were picked to finish third and fourth, respectively.
UC Irvine earned six first-place votes as the favorites to win the South Division... Cal State Northridge was second while UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton round out the South Division projections.
WIESENFARTH LANDS ON PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
Sophomore Matt Wiesenfarth, the 2011 Big West Freshman of the Year, was selected to the preseason all-conference team.
He led UC Davis in virtually every offensive category in 2011 with five goals, 13 points and 38 shots in his debut season.
He was also an All-Big West second team and College Soccer News All-Freshman second team selection last year.
