Sept. 1, 2014

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis junior goalkeeper Kris Schultz capped off a triumphant return in net on Monday afternoon, adding Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors to kick-off the 2014 season.

Schultz, making only his second and third career appearances between the pipes for the Aggies this past weekend after missing all of 2013 due to injury, earned weekly honors from the conference for the first time in his career and became only the 10th different Aggie to earn Big West Player of the Week honors since UC Davis joined the conference in 2007.

The last UC Davis player to earn weekly honors from the league was now-departed goalkeeper Omar Zeenni, who picked up the defensive player of the week award on Sept. 30, 2013.

Two solid performances in net by the Sacramento, California, native helped the Aggies to an unbeaten 1-0-1 week at the ninth-annual Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic in Columbus, Ohio. Schultz collected his first career clean sheet in the opener, battling host Ohio State to a scoreless draw, before watching his team rally for a 2-1 win over Canisius in the tournament finale. Schultz played in all 200 minutes -- his first action since Sept. 16, 2012, against SMU -- making seven saves and posting a 0.45 goals against average.

One of three UC Davis players to earn all-tournament honors (along with teammates Ramon Martin Del Campo and Ryan Gross), Schultz faced a barrage of 21 shots from the Buckeyes' offense to forge the draw and stopped a career-high four shots against the Golden Griffins, including key saves in the 83rd and 87th minutes to preserve the one-goal victory.

Following their trip back East, the Aggies play seven of their next nine contests at home, beginning this weekend against a pair of West Coast Conference foes at the Aggie Soccer Field. UC Davis hosts Loyola Marymount on Friday (Sept. 5) at 5 p.m., before welcoming San Diego to Northern California on Sunday (Sept. 7) at 1 p.m.
