DAVIS, Calif. -- Goals in each of the Aggies' two matches last week helped net UC Davis senior Lizandro Torres Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors, the league office announced on Monday.
It's the first such award for the midfielder from Stockton, Calif., and the first for an Aggie player since teammate Noah Wilson won the award on Oct. 31 of last season.
Torres, a managerial economics major, capped a three-goal first half against Loyola Marymount on Friday with his first of the year in the 29th minute, driving down the left side and firing back across the goal mouth and inside the right post for what would turn out to be the game-winner.
Two days later, Torres gave the Aggies a second-half advantage against San Diego with his second strike in as many matches, converting a cross from teammate Adam Mickelson with a header that found the back of the net.
One of eight UC Davis players to score a goal this season, Torres is tied for second on the team in goals and tied for third in points. Both of his goals this past weekend came on just three shots.
After three straight at home, the Aggies now hit the road for their next three matches, beginning with a huge test on Friday (Sept. 15) at No. 9 Denver. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT in the "Mile High City."
