DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis redshirt freshman Nabi Kibunguchy was named the Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon, helping lead the Aggies' defense to an unbeaten start in league play.
It is the first career honor for the managerial economics major from Elk Grove, Calif., and the second UC Davis player to win a weekly award this season, joining teammate Lizandro Torres, who named was the conference's offensive player of the week on Sept. 11.
Kibunguchy is the first Aggie defensive player to win the award since Roy Boateng did so on Aug. 29 of last season...
Anchoring a stingy Aggie defensive unit that allowed just one goal during the team's Big West opening weekend, posting a 2-0 victory over UC Irvine and a 1-1 draw against CSUN to get UC Davis off to an unbeaten start in league play for the first time since 2012.
Kibunguchy helped limit the Anteaters to just eight total shots -- and only four on frame -- en route to the team's first shutout of the season, while the Matadors had a more difficult time, managing just five shots overall in 110 minutes of play before forcing overtime on a goal with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation.
At the other end, Kibunguchy contributed four shots to UC Davis' offensive attack, including a season-best three attempts against CSUN, helping the Aggies to a 21-5 advantage in that category.
UC Davis continues Big West play with a pair of matches on the road this weekend, heading to Southern California to take on Cal State Fullerton on Thursday (Oct. 5) and UC Riverside on Saturday (Oct. 7). Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at both sites.
