Aggies sweep Big West weekly honors

Oct. 20, 2014

DAVIS, Calif. -- Fresh off a crucial Big West Conference North Division shutout of perennial power UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis junior Lucas Mohageg and senior Brian Ford were named the league's offensive and defensive players of the week for their roles in the victory, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

The awards are the first in the careers for both Mohageg and Ford as the Aggies swept the conference's weekly honors for only the third time since the Big West began conferring separate awards in 2010 and the first time since Kevin Schulte and goalkeeper Omar Zeenni were so honored on Oct. 24, 2011.

With UC Davis seemingly destined for its NCAA record-tying ninth draw of the season, Mohageg "spoiled" those plans with his game-winning header in the 107th minute, sending a capacity crowd of 1,344 fans into a frenzy as the Aggies defeated the Gauchos, 1-0, in their 10th double-overtime match of the season. Teammate Ryan Gross sent a free kick from just inside the midfield stripe, lofting it to a lightly-marked Mohageg at the left post, who headed it in for his team-high fourth goal of the season.

Ford, meanwhile, was busy anchoring a UC Davis back line that was playing without senior center back Ramon Martin Del Campo, who was on the sidelines serving a red card suspension. The senior from Newport Beach, Calif., provided the glue that held UC Santa Barbara to just two shots on goal and a pair of corners in 107 minutes, helping secure the team's fifth clean sheet of the season.

One of three Aggies to have started all 14 contests thus far, Ford has spent the most time on the field of any Aggie, playing 1,436 out of a possible 1,456 minutes this season.

The duo joins Martin Del Campo (Sept. 29) and junior goalkeeper Kris Schultz (Sept. 1) as Big West weekly honorees this season, and only the 13th and 14th different Aggies to win the league's weekly award since joining the Big West in 2007.

UC Davis remains on the road for a pair of matches next week, opening a three-match road trip at Cal Poly on Wednesday (Oct. 22) and against Sacramento State at Bonney Field, home of the USL PRO Champion Sacramento Republic FC, on Saturday (Oct. 25). Both matches kickoff at 7 p.m. from their respective sites.
