IRVINE, Calif. - Sophomore Matt Sheldon picked up his second career Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor on Monday after scoring twice against UC Santa Barbara in a 2-1 victory to help UC Davis remain on top of the Big West North Division.
The Portland native came off the bench in the 22nd minute to score his first goal of the season with just three seconds left before the halftime buzzer. He latched on to a pass from Ramon Martin Del Campo and slotted home a shot into the lower left corner of the goal to tie the game at 1-1.
The teams remained scoreless and headed into overtime where Sheldon struck again. in the 95th minute, Ryan Gross' long throw in was knocked around the penalty box to Sheldon whose first shot was blocked by the UC Santa Barbara defense. He collected his own rebound and shot in between the two defenders, finding the back of the net for the golden goal victory.
The goals were the first of the season for Sheldon.
The win was UC Davis' sixth in seven games and gave the Aggies 18 points and a two-point lead over Sacramento State in the North Division standings. It was UC Davis' first win at Harder Stadium since 2008 and marked the first time in program history the Aggies swept the Gauchos in regular season play.
UC Davis closes out the regular season with two crucial home games, hosting Cal Poly on Wednesday and Sacramento State on Saturday. Both games begin at 3 p.m. at Aggie Soccer Field.
