TOWSON, Md. - For the second consecutive year, senior Mustafa Chopan has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men's Soccer Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced on Wednesday.
After earning a third-team selection in 2011, Chopan's 3.94 grade point average in neurobiology, physiology and behavior placed him on the second team for 2012.
Chopan is the only member of a Big West Conference institution included on the Academic All-America list and joins student-athletes from such programs as Akron, UCLA, Tulsa, Notre Dame and New Mexico.
A team captain for the 2012 season, Chopan appeared in all 21 games as a defensive midfielder, recording three shots on the year while helping UC Davis to six shutouts and a berth in the Big West Conference Tournament championship. Chopan was instrumental in the Aggies' sweep of UC Santa Barbara and Sacramento State, the Big West Tournament semifinal win against Cal State Fullerton and a victory over then-No. 23 Tulsa.
Academically, he ranks in the top 1.3 percent of his class of over 2,000 seniors in the College of Biological Sciences and was a top-10 finalist for the 2012 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Award.
