DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior goalkeeper Omar Zeenni added to his postseason award haul on Tuesday morning, voted to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Far West Region Second Team.
It is the first career all-region honor for Zeenni and the second-straight season that an Aggie has been recognized by the NSCAA, following Brian Ford's third-team honor in 2012. Zeenni becomes the 21st UC Davis men's soccer player to earn all-region honors dating back to 1987 for a total of 27 awards.
The Arcadia, Calif., native capped a stellar senior season that saw him become the first Aggie goalkeeper to earn Big West Conference Goalkeeper of the Year laurels and only the fourth to be named to the All-Big West First Team.
Zeenni, who set school records for career saves (215) and shutouts (18) in 2013, finished among the top half of the league in numerous statistical categories including minutes (5th, 1651:13), goals allowed (t2nd - 17), goals against average (3rd, 0.93), save percentage (3rd, .767), and shutouts (t3rd, 5).
UC Davis finished 9-9-3 overall in 2013 with a 4-4-2 mark in Big West play to finish second in the league's North Division, advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament before falling to eventual NCAA Tournament "Sweet 16" competitor UC Irvine.
Zeenni was one of 11 players from the Big West to be honored, including five on the first and five more on the second team. A complete listing of the Far West all-region squad is available at http://www.nscaa.com/news/2013/12/2013-nscaa-continental-tire-ncaa-division-i-men-s-all-far-west-region.
