Motekaitis enters his eighth season as head coach at UC Davis, having brought the program back to national prominence in his short time at his alma mater.
“Generally, our focus is having our base training occur in the fall with intense dry-land training and conditioning,” Motekaitis says of his training regimen.
“Our focus is having the best possible championship season at conference and nationals.”
Motekaitis’ name has become synonymous with championship-caliber swimming in Davis. For 15 seasons, he was the director of the highly successful Davis Aquadarts age-group program. While there, he developed a number of All-Americans and athletes who went on to race competitively in college programs around the nation.
Motekaitis also serves as head coach for the Davis Senior High School swimming program. Under his guidance, Blue Devil teams have earned 18 straight league titles and an astounding 12 Sac-Joaquin Section championships.
A 1983 graduate of UC Davis with a bachelor’s degree in history, Motekaitis was also an All-American swimmer for the Aggies throughout his college career. He set individual school records in the 100 back, 200 back and 200 IM, as well as relay marks in the 800 free and 400 medley relays.
As an educator, he earned a master’s degree in sports fitness from the University of San Francisco in 1997.
