PERSONAL: Born Feb. 5, 1981 in Portland, Ore.... Son of J. Gordon & Rhoda Roper... Graduated last spring in computer science and engineering, now enrolled in graduate program... Chose UC Davis for its excellence in swimming and engineering, but credits his cousin for suggesting it... Enjoys developing software as a hobby... Proudest accomplishment: once voluntarily swam a 10,000-yard IM.
