SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Parker Kelley earned a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 singles victory over Ilya Osintsev in his team’s season-opener at the Degheri Tennis Center in Santa Clara, Calif. Unfortunately for UC Davis, that win was the only one recorded throughout the day as the Aggies fell 6-1 to No. 36 Santa Clara Saturday afternoon.
The inaugural dual match of the 2013 season for both teams, Santa Clara now sports a 1-0 record, UC Davis will enter its home opener this Friday with a 0-1 mark.
"The guys really competed today, we just faced a good team that was a bit faster to the ball," said UC Davis head coach Eric Steidlmayer.
Starting his singles match against Osintsev by taking the first set 7-5, the northwest region’s No. 17 player responded by winning the following set to force a decisive third frame. Once Kelley broke Osintsev’s serve, he pulled away to record the lone point for the Aggies on the afternoon.
UC Davis’ Toki Sherbakov won his first set of singles competition against the Broncos’ John Lamble 6-2 in the second of two singles matches that needed all three sets to declare a victor.
Lamble entered Saturday’s non-conference contest with a national No. 65 and regional No. 2 ranking.
"We are going to work hard this week (at practice) hopefully play a little better and get some wins."
Competing against one of the toughest teams in the country in his UC Davis debut, Steidlmayer and his Aggie men’s tennis team will return to the Marya Welch Tennis Center on Friday, Jan. 25, to face Sonoma State at 1:30 p.m. in their home opener.
The first of two home matches scheduled in as many days, UC Davis will end its weekend against Pacific Tigers on Saturday in a 1 p.m. Big West Conference matchup, the first of the year for each team.
