FRESNO, Calif. - No.56 Fresno State University captured five of six singles matches to clinch the victory in a 5-1 win over UC Davis Saturday afternoon at the Wathen Tennis Center.
The loss drops UC Davis to 1-3 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 4-0.
The match was closer than the final score indicated as three of the singles matches went to three sets. The Bulldogs earned straight-set wins at No.1 when Jakub Cech defeated Michael Chin 6-3, 6-3, and at No.4 when Nicolas Mascheroni posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Daniel Furman. At No.3 Fresno State's Andy Sinn used two breaks to defeat Jayce Fitch 7-5, 6-3.
At No.2, Aggie freshman Daniel Elefant captured the first set against Charles Irie, but couldn't hold the lead as Irie captured a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 victory. The Bulldogs pulled out another three-set win at No.5 as Sam Tadevosian needed a third-set tiebreaker to defeated Henri Landes, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4).
UC Davis earned its only victory of the day at No.6 when freshman Jordan Combs defeated Sam Gibbs, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Doubles play, which usually starts the day, was not contested.
UC Davis is next in action on Saturday when it heads south to face UC Irvine at noon.
