BEAVERTON, Ore. - Alec Haley, George Horowitz, Mitch Thorp each won their first singles match of the season Friday afternoon at the Tualitin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ore., to help UC Davis sweep the George Fox Bruins by a 9-0 margin.
The sweep is the second earned by UC Davis this season; in its home opener against Somona State, the Aggies earned their first win of the season by dominating the Seawolves in every individual match.
With the win, the Aggies improve to 2-2 overall, George Fox falls to 0-1 after facing UC Davis in its inaugural match of the Bruins' season.
Kyle Miller also secured his first doubles victory of the year, partnering with Haley to help earn a sweep of all three contests to help UC Davis jump out to an early 3-0 lead.
Unlike matches normally contested under Division I rules where two victories out of the three contested are needed to secure the one doubles point up for grabs, each doubles match counted as one point.
Competing in the two spot, Miller/Haley cruised to an 8-2 victory over Peter Brown and Justin McClain. Toki Sherbakov/Adam Levie earned an 8-4 doubles win as the Aggies' No. 1 duo, with Horowitz/Brett Bacharach completing the doubles sweep with their 8-1 triumph.
Heading into the round of singles matches, UC Davis needed only two wins out of the six played to start its four-day, four-match road trip throughout Oregon on a positive note.
The Aggies took all six to complete their sweep over the Bruins.
Haley recorded his first singles win by defeating Drew Milton 6-1, 6-2, once Horowitz and Thorp defeated Preston Mann and Chace Stalcup by respective scores of 6-3, 7-5 and 6-2, 6-1, the overall outcome of the day's event became official.
Led by Miller who prevented Shawn Aldrech from winning a single game in his 6-0, 6-0 victory, Sherbakov and Bacharach also cruised to victories in their respective singles matches.
For the second straight season, George Fox opened its season against the Aggies; as was the case last season, UC Davis cruised to a 9-0 sweep.
A quick turnaround now looms for the men's tennis team as the squad will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 2, against Seattle. As is the case with Sunday's match against the Portland Pilots, Saturday's match against the Redhawks will take place at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Portland.
