Men’s Tennis wins the dual with the Dons

Feb. 3, 2018

DAVIS, Calif. — Freshman Ivan Thamma, sophomore Mitchell Iwahiro, and seniors Everett Maltby and Tommy Lam each picked up singles victories to help UC Davis secure a 5-2 victory over San Francisco’s team on Saturday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.

This is the first dual match win for the Aggies since their game against Pacific on their season-opener weekend. UC Davis now has a 2-4 overall record.

The Aggies started off their dual match against the Dons by getting the doubles lead after the third match concluded. UC Davis partners of Maltby and Thamma finished their match first with a win over Ryan Marker and Paul Giraud, 6-3, and then tandem of Jonathan Star and Chethan Swanson clinched the one point advantage for the Aggies in the last doubles match, besting San Francisco’s Oliver Poysti and Lucas Marinelli, 7-6.

Lam and Iwahiro started the Aggies off on a good foot by getting the first and second singles victories with straight-set wins over their opponents; however, the Dons pushed through to get the next two singles victories, making it a close 3-2 game.

That was the last time San Francisco scored over UC Davis for the duration of the dual, as Maltby officially scored the Aggies’ fourth team point after his straight-set win over Ryan Marker; however, Thamma continued his match to bump the team score to five after earning a straight-set win over San Francisco’s Johan Joenhagen.

The Aggies return to action next weekend with thee matches on the road. On Feb 9, the men’s tennis team will meet with Washington, followed by Portland on Feb. 10, and finally Gonzaga on Feb. 11.
