RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Davis swept the opening doubles point but it was not enough as UC Riverside captured five of six singles matches to take a 5-2 win over the Aggies Sunday afternoon.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 1-5 on the season.
The day began with UC Davis taking all three doubles matches for the opening point. Playing new combinations at the top two spots, the pair of Michael Chin and Justin Garcia posted an 8-6 win over Justin Montgomery and Norman Tam at No.1. At No.2, Jayce Fitch and Bastian Bartels defeated Mark Contreras and Christian Frick 9-7, while Casey McMakin and Jordan Combs made it an Aggie sweep with an 8-5 win over Joe Cartledge and Jordan Leo at No.3.
In singles it was a different story as the Highlanders clinched the match with five wins, three coming in straight sets. The lone Aggie win came at No.5 when Daniel Furman posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Frick. Two matches went to a third set as Tam defeated Fitch, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 at No.2 and Leo rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Henri Landes at No.6
UC Davis is next in action on Saturday when it hosts Sacramento State at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
