Singles Sweep Nets Aggies Their First Victory

DAVIS, Calif. -- After surrendering the doubles point, the UC Davis men's tennis survived a venue change and dominated singles play, Saturday night, sweeping the six matches en route to its first win of the season, 6-1, over visiting UC Riverside in the Big West Conference opener for both teams.

Persistent rain in the Davis area forced the competitors inside, competing at the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center in nearby Sacramento nearly five hours past the originally scheduled time of 2 p.m. Once there, the Highlanders (0-10 overall, 0-1 in the Big West) took the early, 1-0, lead by claiming the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.

The UC Davis duo of freshman Bryce McKelvie and senior Kyle Miller gave the Aggies (1-4, 1-0) their first doubles win of any kind in 2014, posting a win over Julian Ruffin and Marcus Vizcarra, 8-3, at the No. 3 spot. Entering the day, UC Davis had been 0-8 in doubles play during dual matches this season.

However, the Aggies rebounded strong in singles, claiming four straight-set wins and outlasting UC Riverside for a pair of three-set victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots in the lineup to clinch the match and their third-straight win over the Highlanders.

Miller earned his second-straight singles victory with a 7-5, 6-1, win over Luis Gastao at the No. 1 spot, and freshman Alec Adamson improved to 11-4 in singles play overall this season with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Jack Felich at the No. 2 position.

Sophomore Brett Bacharach, a 6-1, 6-4, winner over Julian Ruffin at No. 3, and freshman James Wade, a 7-6, 6-4, victor over reigning Big West Athlete of the Week Cooper Bridge, each earned their team-best 13th singles wins of the season, while Wade improved to a team-best 4-1 in duals this season.


 

 

Senior Parker Kelley snapped a personal five-match losing skid with his win at No. 5, outlasting UCR's Vizcarra after dropping the first set for a, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, win for his seventh victory overall this season. McKelvie then extended his team-best singles winning streak to three with a marathon, 7-5, 3-6, 11-9, win at No. 6 over Sean Yun.

UC Davis returns to the courts on Saturday (Feb. 15) at with another scheduled doubleheader to close out a five-match homestand at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Aggies host Holy Names at 9 a.m., before facing their fifth West Coast Conference opponent of the season in Saint Mary's at 1 p.m.
