Aggies edge Toreros in rainy inaugural meeting

Feb. 11, 2017

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- UC Davis freshman Max Pham won his third straight at No. 6 to tie the match at three-all before senior Alec Adamson powered his way to a straight set victory at No. 2 and clinch the victory, helping lift the visiting Aggies to a, 4-3, win at San Diego in the first-ever meeting between the programs at the Hogan Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif., on Saturday afternoon.

In a match that was delayed three hours due to weather, UC Davis improved to 2-3 overall on the year with the win, evening its record on the team's Southern California trip at 1-1 following a clash with No. 9 USC on Thursday. Four of the Aggies' five duals this spring have been decided by 4-3 scores following Saturday's result.

The Toreros, who advanced to the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament and finished the year ranked No. 29 in the nation, fell to 3-2 on the year with the loss.

For the fourth time in five matches this season, UC Davis jumped out to the early lead by winning the doubles points, getting identical, 6-4, victories from Bryce McKelvie and James Wade at No. 2 and Adamson and Pham at No. 3 for a 1-0 lead in the match.

When the scene shifted to singles, San Diego bounced back quickly to take the lead, posting straight set wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions, but Wade wrapped up his first dual win of the season at the No. 3 position, defeating Josh Page in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. A win in three sets at No. 5 put the Toreros a point away from clinching the match, but the Aggies dug deep and rallied for the victory.

Pham, who posted the team's lone point in a straight set win against the Trojans on Thursday, made it three straight wins on Saturday with a, 7-5, 6-4, triumph over Alex Araouzos, setting the stage for Adamson's second clincher of the year at the No. 2 position as the senior outlasted Guus Koevermans, 7-5, 7-6, for the win.

With three wins in dual match play, Adamson and Pham lead the team in that category, while Pham now leads the team in overall victories with 12.

The Aggies close out their Southern California trip on Sunday morning at 11 a.m., taking on San Diego State in another first-ever meeting at the Aztec Tennis Center.
