Pomona Stops UC Davis In California Invitational First Round

Feb. 14, 2003

POMONA, Calif. - Seniors Greg Lee and Paul Dilloway each captured two victories for the Aggies but it was not enough as No.26 Cal Poly Pomona won four of six singles matches to come away with a 6-3 victory over No.21 UC Davis in the opening round of the 2003 California Men's Invitational tennis tournament Friday afternoon at the Kellogg Tennis Complex.

It marked the second consecutive season the Broncos have topped the Aggies in the opening round of this event and pushes UC Davis' record to 0-6 on the season.

The match began with the Broncos taking two of three doubles matches with Andy and Alan Chang defeating the Aggie duo of Corey Lum and Charlie Nuwer, 8-2, at No.3. Nguyen Than and David Nguyen then won at No.2, defeating Kyle Trinosky and Ross Barasch, 8-6. Lee and Dilloway prevented a Bronco sweep by defeating Andy Roland and Seamus Sullivan, 8-5, at No.1

In single splay, Lee improved his record to 17-2 on the season and won for the 12th straight time as he defeated Roland, 6-2, 6-2, at No.1. Dilloway followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Than at No.2, but that would be all for the Aggies. Pomona would capture straight-set wins at No.3, No.4 and No.5, while Andy Chang needed a third-set tie breaker to defeat Derek Fung, 2-6, 6-4, (10-8).

UC Davis will continue play at the California Men's Invitational on Saturday when it faces either Azusa Pacific or College of the Desert in the second round.
