POMONA, Calif. - Bastian Bartels and Casey McMakin each captured two victories to lead UC Davis to a 7-2 win over host Cal Poly Pomona in the second round of the Men's California Team Tennis Invitational Saturday morning at the Kellogg Tennis Center.
With the win the Aggies improve to 4-3 on the season and will now face Azusa Pacific in Sunday's championship match. Azusa Pacific is the No.1-ranked team in NAIA.
Bartels and Michael Chin defeated Alan and Andy Chang, 8-5, at No.2 while Casey and Kyle McMakin gave the Aggies a 2-1 lead with the 8-4 win over Seth Lewkow and Richie Delgado at No.3. Pomona earned its first point when David Nguyen and Guido Weidenfeld defeated Kyle Trinosky and Ross Barasch, 8-2, at the top spot.
In singles play, Nguyen second the only other point for the Broncos with a 6-4, 2-6, (10-7) win over Chin at No.1. After splitting the first two sets, a 10-point tiebreaker was played in place of the third.
It was all UC Davis in the remaining five matches, though none came easy. Casey McMakin posted the only straight-set win for the Aggies, defeating Sebastian Torres, 6-3, 6-1, at No.6 singles. The remaining four matches were needed a third set to be decided. Jayce Fitch jumped out early then rallied for the 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win over Andy Chang at No.2 while Robert Wong also won the first, then captured a third-set tiebreaker for the 7-5, 2-6, (10-5) win over Weidenfeld at No.3.
Bartels dropped his first set to Lewkow, 6-1, then won the next two convincingly for the 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at No.4 and Barasch earned the final victory with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Alan Chang at No.5.
