Aggies sweep the day with wins over Seawolves and Gaels

Feb. 17, 2018

DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis men's tennis team came away with two wins on Saturday's doubleheader at the Marya Welch Tennis Center after shutting out Sonoma State, 7-0, in the morning, followed by a 4-1 win over Saint Mary's team later in the afternoon.

After the two wins, the Aggies were able to bump their overall record to 4-7 for the 2018 dual season.

In the morning matchup against Sonoma State, UC Davis hit the ground swinging as they claimed the doubles point early on, thanks to Aggie tandems Jonathan Star and Chethan Swanson, as well as Ivan Thamma and Everett Maltby, each defeating their opponents with scores of 6-3 and 6-4, respectively. UC Davis duo David Goulak and Tommy Lam were the last finished match in doubles play, but they also left the courts with a 6-3 victory over the Seawolves.

The Aggies secured the 1-0 lead going into singles; however, the lead didn't seem to make a difference in the grand scheme of things as UC Davis finished the match with a shutout after winning all six singles matches in straight sets. Goulak, Star, and Arjith Jayaraman's straight-set wins officially got the Aggies to the four-point threshold and the team victory; however, both teams agreed to play out the remaining matches, and that is when Mitchell Iwahiro, Thamma, and Swanson also scored three additional points to give the Aggies a max score of seven.

For the UC Davis matchup with Saint Mary's that took place in the early afternoon, Aggie duo Thamma and Maltby, as well as Goulak and Lam, helped the Aggies clinch their second 1-0 lead of the day after scoring 6-1 and 6-4 match victories, respectively.

Going into singles play, Thamma earned the first of three Aggie victories after his matchup with Nash Vollenweider, 6-3, 6-0; however, the Gaels pushed through to get a singles win over Thamma and prevent UC Davis from another shutout. Luckily, that was the only time the Moraga, Calif., university scored over the Aggies as Star responded with a 7-5, 6-2, match win over Saint Mary's Chambers Easterling, while Maltby went on to clinch the team win for UC Davis after going up against Matt Campana, 6-4, 6-1.

The UC Davis men's tennis team returns to action tomorrow afternoon to play against Santa Clara's team at the all-familiar Marya Welch Tennis Center before rounding out their competition weekend.
