DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis men's tennis team won the doubles point over Santa Clara at the Marya Welch Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon; however, since the Aggies only secured two of the six singles match wins, the three points earned by UC Davis fell short to Santa Clara's four-point score.
The Aggies now carry a 4-8 overall record going into their next dual match.
UC Davis partners Chethan Swanson and Jonathan Star led their team to the first of two doubles victories after defeating Connor Garnett and Kamran Khan, 6-3, but Santa Clara pushed through to also garner a doubles match win at the No. 1 position. In the last doubles match to be played out, it was Aggie tandem David Goulak and Tommy Lam who clinched the 1-0 lead after their 7-6 victory over Vasileios Iliopoulps and Jesus Barajas.
Lam and freshman Ivan Thamma were the only two Aggies to win a singles match over the Broncos. The first of the two defeated his opponent in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-3, while the latter of the two scored a straight-set win over Santa Clara's Robert Seby, 6-4, 7-5, to tie the dual 3-3 going into the last unfinished match of the day; however, it was the Broncos that eventually secured the four point win.
The UC Davis men's tennis returns to action this Friday (Feb. 23) in Palo Alto, Calif., to meet with Stanford on their courts.
