LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC Davis picked up straight set victories in both matches played Thursday evening in the inaugural day of competition at the 124th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in La Jolla, Calif.
The first Aggie pairing to compete in the three-day tournament, Adam Luba and Kyle Miller defeated the independent team of Esteban and Isaac Altuna 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the Round of 64 Friday afternoon.
Miller and Luba will face either Oklahoma State's Richard Del Nunzio/Matt Campbell or Furman's Jacob Behal/Tyler Droll at 12:30 p.m.
Also advancing to the next round are Adam Levie and Toki Sherbakov; they earned another straight-set triumph in the Aggies' nightcap, downing San Diego's Jakob Karnopp/Andrew Raphaelson 6-2, 6-1. The duo will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. against Billy Grokenberger/Philip Nelson from Boston College or Pepperdine's Francis Alcantara/Finn Terney.
Taking the court for their inaugural match Friday morning match are Mitch Thorp and Hugo Verdi-Fortin as they will face Cal's Tyler Brown/Mads Engstead at 8 a.m. A 9:45 a.m. start is scheduled for Brett Bacharach and Geroge Horowitz's match against Villanova's Ryan Peyton/Christopher Seitz.
