FRESNO, Calif. -- UC Davis senior Bryce McKelvie bounced back from an opening set loss, saving a pair of match points in the final set before defeating Fresno State's Zdenek Derkas, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6, in a third-set tiebreaker to lift the Aggies to a, 4-3, win over the Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon at the Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, Calif.
UC Davis earned its first-ever win over Fresno State, improving to 6-4 overall on the season, having won five of its last six. The Bulldogs fell to 6-5 overall with the loss.
For only the second time this season, the Aggies were put in an early hole as the host side took two out of three in doubles for a 1-0 lead in the match. The tandem of David Goulak and Tommy Lam posted a, 6-3, win at No. 2 to tie things up before the Bulldogs' Patrik Pech and Euan McIntosh clinched the point with a 6-4 win at the top spot.
Fresno State quickly made it a 2-0 lead with a straight-set win in singles at the No. 6 position, but UC Davis bounced back with a comeback by seniors Alec Adamson and James Wade at the top two positions. Wade gutted out a, 7-5, 6-3, win over McIntosh, and Adamson had to rally for his three-set win over Xander Veys at No. 1. After dropping the first set, 6-1, Adamson trailed 4-1 in the second before mounting his comeback, posting a 6-4 win and closing out the three-set triumph with a 6-3 win in the third to make it two-all.
The Bulldogs regained the lead with a win at No. 5 as senior Jesse Ross jumped out with a 6-4 win in the first, only to have Youssef Hassan rally for a, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, victory for a 3-2 advantage in the match, but junior Everett Maltby saved match points in the second before rallying to defeat Henrique Osorio, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, and send everyone over to court three for the clincher.
Derkas and McKelvie split the first two sets by the scored of 6-2 and 6-3, respectively, but the Fresno State freshman had the Aggies' senior on the ropes, up 5-3 in the third. McKelvie, however, responded by saving a pair of match points to force a tiebreaker at six-all, which he won 7-3 to clinch the contest.
UC Davis will look to ride the momentum into its second dual in as many days, facing off against Loyola Marymount on Thursday (March 2) at 9 a.m. in Los Angeles, before heading further south to compete in the 128th annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club in La Jolla, Calif.
