Aggies claim another nail biter on Whittle's clincher

March 2, 2017

LOS ANGELES -- Trailing 3-2 in the match with singles coming to a close, UC Davis freshman David Goulak outlasted Loyola Marymount's Alex Bougeois in three sets to tie things up, before senior Eli Whittle closed it out, bouncing back from a second-set loss to defeat Luke Bohuslav in three sets to help the Aggies clinch their second straight, 4-3, victory on Thursday morning at the LMU Tennis Center in Los Angeles.

After edging past Fresno State by the same score on Wednesday, UC Davis continued to roll with Thursday's victory, improving to 7-4 overall on the season and win for the sixth time in its last seven duals. The Lions fell to 3-6 overall on the year with the loss.

Thursday marked the seventh time in 11 matches that the Aggies have had a match decided by a 4-3 score, posting a 5-2 record in those contests and winning their last five straight such decisions after dropping back-to-back matches at Pacific to start the spring season.

Having had to come from behind after dropping the doubles point against the Bulldogs, the Aggies got back to their winning doubles ways on Thursday against LMU, quickly picking up the 1-0 advantage with wins by Bryce McKelvie and James Wade at No. 1 along with David Goulak and Tommy Lam at No. 2.

Wade briefly gave UC Davis a 2-1 advantage with his straight-set win over Max Kaiser at No. 2 singles, but the Lions put UC Davis' collective backs against the wall with a straight-set win at No. 1 and a three-set victory at No. 3, for a 3-2 lead in the match.

Goulak the shook off a loss in a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Alex Bourgeois, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, and tie the match at three-all, setting the stage for Whittle's victory at No. 5. The senior from Nipomo, Calif., opened with a 6-4 victory before Bohuslav bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second to knot the match at a set apiece. A slugfest then ensues as two battled through five match points before Whittle closed things out with a 6-4 win in the third.

UC Davis breaks from dual match play to compete at the 128th annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, which begins Thursday and runs through the weekend. The Aggies then close out their trip to Southern California with a dual against William & Mary on Sunday at Noon at the Surf & Turf Tennis Club in Del Mar, Calif.
