DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Greg Lee had convincing wins in the top singles and doubles positions, but it wasn't enough as UC Santa Cruz defeated UC Davis, 7-2, in a men's tennis match Sunday afternoon at Hickey Courts.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 4-9 on the season.
The afternoon began with UC Santa Cruz capturing two of three doubles matches. Lee and Paul Dilloway provided the Aggies with its only doubles point after an 8-1 victory over Matt Brunner and Ben Bartels. Brian Casey and Shane Templeman won at No.2 for the Banana Slugs over Ross Barasch and Kyle Trinosky while Kevin Casey and Bryce Parmelly escaped with a 9-7 win over Charles Nuwer and Nikolai Novikov at No.3
In singles play, Lee was the only victorious Aggie as he had little trouble with Brian Casey, winning 6-0, 6-1. Dilloway jumped out fast at No.2 over Kevin Casey, winning the first set 6-0, but he could not sustain the momentum and Casey rebounded to take the net two sets and match, 6-4, 6-1. Novikov was the only other Aggie to capture a set as he lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 to Bartels at No.6.
"I thought our match today was a big lesson," said Aggie Head Coach Daryl Lee. "We need to be mentally tougher on big points and be more fit. Hopefully the guys have the desire to want to work on these things over the next few weeks before our next match."
UC Davis will be off until April 5 when they travel to face Idaho State.
