DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis won the opening doubles point then captured five singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory over Nevada in a men's tennis match Sunday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
With the win the Aggies improve to 3-9 on the season.
UC Davis took the opening point by winning two of three doubles matches. Michael Chin and Justin Garcia rode a break of serve to the 8-6 win over Adam Jooste and Milos Popovic at No.1 while Daniel Furman and Blake Roberts also won by a single break, defeating Max Volger and Eldar Dzhafarov, 8-6, at No.3. At No.2, the Wolf Pack duo of Brandon Sieh and Rafal Stupka captured a tiebreaker for the 9-8 win over Daniel Elefant and Henri Landes.
In singles play the Aggies won three matches in straight sets to clinch the victory. Chin claimed a 6-1 first set win and was leading in the second when Popovic was forced to retire due to injury, trailing 6-1, 2-0, at No.2. Bastian Bartels won his fourth match in a row with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Eldar Dzhafarov at No.5 while Casey McMakin captured a first-set tiebreaker as he defeated Kensuke Watabe, 7-6, 6-4, at No.6.
The Aggies also picked up wins at No.1 when Jayce Fitch defeated Jooste, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, at No.4 when Elefant rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, (10-5) victory over Stupka. The two played a super tiebreaker for the third set since the team victory was already clinched.
Nevada gained its only point of the afternoon when Sieh dropped the first set before rallying for the 2-6, 7-5, (10-4) win over Jordan Combs at No.3.
UC Davis is next in action on April 1 when it hosts Montana State at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. Matchtime is set for 2:30 p.m.
