Aggies Take Three Singles Matches But Dons Come Away With 4-3 Victory

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of San Francisco captured the opening doubles point and it was the difference in the match as the Dons got by UC Davis, 4-3,k in a nonconference men's tennis match Saturday afternoon at Golden Gate Park.

With the loss the Aggies fall to 3-12 on the season while the Dons improve to 10-9.

In doubles action USF took two of three matches to come away with the opening point. Pablo Pires De Almeida and Philip Riise-Hanssen defeated Justin Garcia and Michael Chin, 8-4, at No.1 while Greg Hom and William O'Shea escaped with an 8-6 win over Jordan Combs and Casey McMakin to clinch the point. The Aggies won at No.3 when Daniel Elefant and Henri Landes defeated Timo Kienle and Falko Huttenberger, 8-6.

In singles play the Dons clinched the victory by winning at the top three spots, all in three sets. Kienle won a first set tiebreaker before defeating Jayce Fitch, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, at No.1 while Riise Hanssen defeated Chin at No.2, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. At No.3 Huttenberger dropped a close second set before prevailing, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

The Aggies earned singles wins at No.'s 4-6 as Bastian Bartels continued his impressive play with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Fernando Rodriguez. McMakin defeated Andrew Hogan at No.5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 while at No.6, Garcia, playing his first dual singles match of the season, won two close sets over Andrew Bertolina, 6-4, 7-6.

UC Davis is next in action on Thursday when it hosts UC San Diego in the home finale. Thursday also is the dedication ceremony for the Marya Welch Tennis Center, which features and exhibition match between John McEnroe and Wayne Ferreira. The dedication ceremonies begin at 5 p.m.
