DAVIS, Calif. - UC Santa Cruz swept the opening three doubles matches and never looked back as it cruised to a 9-0 victory over UC Davis in a men's tennis match Sunday afternoon at Hickey Courts.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 8-9 on the season.
The Banana Slugs dropped just one set in the nine matches. Matt Brunner and Kellen Ali-Christie defeated Jayce Fitch and Ross Barasch 8-4 at No.1 doubles. Shane Templeman and Matt Seeberger then posted an 8-3 win over Bastian Bartels and Michael Chin at No.2 while Kevin and Brian Casey defeated the Aggies' brother tandem of Casey and Kyle McMakin, 8-4, at No.3.
In singles play, Kevin Casey had little trouble with Barasch at No.4, winning 6-0, 6-0. Templeman recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win over Chin at No.3 while Brian Casey defeated Fitch, 6-2, 6-4, at the top spot.
Andrew Cohen won a close second set to defeat Blake Roberts at No.6, 6-3, 7-5. Seeberger needed two tiebreakers to defeat Robert Wong at No.2, 7-6, 7-6 while Casey McMakin forced Brunner to a third set tiebreaker before falling, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6.
"UC Santa Cruz is a great team," said Aggie head coach Daryl Lee. They are the second toughest team we have faced all year in terms of talent behind Fresno State. They deserve all the credit for the win."
The Aggies close out their home schedule next Saturday against UC San Diego at Hickey Courts. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
