DAVIS, Calif. - UC San Diego captured four singles matches, three in three sets, to rally for a 4-3 victory over UC Davis in a men's tennis match Thursday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 3-14 on the season.
UC Davis came out strong by capturing two of the three doubles matches to take the opening point. Michael Chin and Justin Garica posted an 8-2 win over Seth Spector and Brent Molden at No.1 while Casey McMakin and Jordan Combs won by an identical score over Bryan Swatt and Will Phan at No.2. The Tritons won at No.3 when Erik Oijala and Blake Meister escaped with a 9-7 win over Daniel Elefant and Henri Landes.
In singles play the Aggies looked to be in control as they won the first set in four matches, but UC San Diego rallied to gain the victory. Oiajala gained the first Triton win as he defeated Bastian Bartels at No.4, 6-2, 6-1, while Chin won two close sets for a 7-5, 7-6 win over Molden at No.2. The remaining four matches went three sets, with UC Davis able to get only one win as McMakin defeated Phan, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 at No.6.
The Tritons came away with the other three as Swatt pulled away from Jayce Fitch for the 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at No.1 with Spector dropping a first-set tiebreaker before taking a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over Combs at No.3. Meister had the other UC San Diego win as he defeated Elefant, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
UC Davis is next in action on Saturday when it visits the University of Nevada in Reno.
