IRVINE, Calif. -- The UC Davis men's tennis team finished off its regular season with its third consecutive victory, shutting down host UC Irvine with a 5-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Anteater Tennis Stadium.
The Aggies improved to 14-7 overall and 4-1 in Big West Conference play, winning for the fifth time in their last six contests overall and the fourth time in the last five meetings with the Anteaters. Saturday's victory also gives UC Davis at least 14 wins in each of the last four seasons, while the Aggies tied the school record with its four conference triumphs -- matching the 2015 squad that shared the Big West regular season title.
UCI, which claimed its only two points of the day with singles wins at No. 1 and No. 3, fell to 8-14 overall and 2-3 in league matches.
The senior duo of Bryce McKelvie and James Wade clinched a 1-0 lead in the match for UC Davis, posting a 7-5 win over Luca Marquard and Mason Hansen at No. 2 doubles. They joined freshman David Goulak and junior Tommy Lam, who defeated Sebastian Heim and Luis Lopez, 6-2, at the top spot, as doubles winners on the day.
With singles next up, the Anteaters tied up the match with a quick win at No. 1, but the Aggies rattled off four consecutive victories to clinch the contest. Senior Eli Whittle put UC Davis back in front with a straight-set, 6-2, 6-2, win over Vatsal Bajpai at No. 5, and freshman Max Pham added a, 6-4, 6-0, victory over Andrew Gong at No. 6 to put the Aggies on the brink.
Junior Everett Maltby then became the first UC Davis player to reach 20 wins on the season, clinching the match for his team with a come-from-behind, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, win over Mason Hansen at No. 4. Wade then capped the scoring for the Aggies, posting a, 6-3, 6-4, win over Luca Marquard at No. 2.
UC Davis now readies itself for next week's Big West Tournament, which begins on Thursday (April 27) at 9 a.m. at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif. The Aggies, who currently sit in second place in the league standings, would gain a first round bye into the semifinals, which begin Friday (April 28) at 3 p.m.
The championship match will be held on Sunday (April 30) at 9 a.m.
