McMakin, Fitch Advance To Round Of 16 At ITA West Regional

POMONA, Calif. - Freshmen Casey McMakin and Jayce Fitch each won second-round matches to advance to Friday's Round of 16 following the first day of play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Regional Thursday at the Kellogg Tennis Center.

McMakin, seeded No.8, defeated Sonoma State's Thomas Morton, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, in his only match of the day. He will now face UC San Diego's Nick Morton in the third round. Fitch captured his only match of the day, a 6-3, 6-3 win over Cal Poly Pomona's Daniel Chang, and will next face UC San Diego's Brent Molden on Friday.

Two other Aggies captured opening-round wins on Thursday as Kyle McMakin, Casey's brother, defeated Colorado School of Mines Mark Chung, 6-1, 6-3, and Robert Wong cruised past Western New Mexico's Andrew Sajbert, 6-0, 6-1. Wong was defeated in the second round by No.1-seed Sameer Chopra of UC San Diego, 6-2, 6-3, while Kyle McMakin dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to No.3-seed David Nguyen of Cal Poly Pomona.

Play continues at the ITA West Regional through Saturday.
