POMONA, Calif. -
UC Davis players Greg Lee, Paul Dilloway and Nikolai Novikov all captured victories in the early rounds of play at the Omni Hotels West Region Tennis Championships on Thursday.
Lee, seeded No.3, had little trouble defeating Sonoma State's Zeus Kuzu, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round of singles play. Dilloway, the No.7 seed, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Western New Mexico's Steve Patton. Novikov advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Western New Mexico's Jon Sklenar and will now face No.6 seed Bryan Swatt of UC San Diego.
Eric Holmes, Kyle Trinosky and Blake Roberts all dropped their first-round singles matches in straight sets.
In doubles play, Lee and Dilloway, the No.2 seeds, captured both of their matches and advanced to Friday's semifinals. Holmes and novikov dropped a close match against the No.3 seeded team of Nester Bernabe and Mike Morrison of Sonoma State, 8-6. Roberts and Trinosky also fell in their first match, 8-6, to the UC San Diego duo of Blake Wilson and Nick Morton.
"For our first tournament of the year, I thought we played with a lot of effort and intensity," said Aggie Head Coach Daryl Lee. "We have a lot of new players this season that we are going to count on and this tournament is a good start to our year."
Play continues at the West Region Championships through Saturday.
