POMONA, Calif. - Freshmen Jayce Fitch captured a third-set tiebreaker in his third-round match, one of two Aggies in the third round, before falling in the quarterfinals to No.3-seed Emil Novak following the second day of play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Regional Friday at the Kellogg Tennis Center.
Fitch's first match on Friday was a three-set affair as he faced UC San Diego's Brent Molden. Molden, who defeated No.6-seed Patrick Nagle of Sonoma State on Thursday, raced out to the early lead by taking the first set, 6-2. Fitch responded by taking the second set, 6-2, then capped the match by winning a tiebreaker in the third set. The win pushed Fitch into the quarterfinals against UC San Diego's Novak, who escaped with the 7-5, 6-4 win. Novak was one of four Tritons to reach the semifinals.
UC Davis freshman Casey McMakin, the No.8-seed, also played Friday morning. McMakin, who won a three-set match on Thursday, dropped a 6-1, 7-5 decision against Nick Morton of UC San Diego.
In doubles play, a pair of Aggie teams reached the quarterfinals. Fitch and Robert Wong dropped an 8-2 contest against the Triton duo of Emil and Thomas Novak. Casey McMakin and his brother, Kyle also fell to a UC San Diego team as Brian Swatt and Amir Nejad captured an 8-6 victory.
Semifinal and championship matches at the ITA West Regional will be played on Saturday.
