DAVIS, Calif. - Hugo Verdi-Fortin advanced to Saturday's Flight B singles quarterfinal to highlight a strong first day of action for the UC Davis men's tennis team at its own Aggie Invitational, held at the Marya Welch Tennis Center in Davis.
Verdi-Fortin defeated Saint Mary's Thomas Hunt 6-2, 6-3 before taking on Cal's Stuart Miller. He earned a three-set victory over Miller, dropping the first set 5-7 before rallying to win 6-2 and 6-1. He'll face Stanford's Nolan Paige in the quarterfinals.
In other Flight B Singles action, senior George Horowicz moved past Sonoma State's David Hutton with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win, but suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Stanford's Maciek Romanowicz. Junior Adam Luba also advanced past his first round opponent, claiming a 6-0, 6-2 win over San Francisco's Jason Lee, before falling to Stanford's Trey Lobel, 6-1, 6-3 in the round of 16.
Kyle Miller takes on Pacific's Ben Mirkin in the quarterfinals of the Flight A Singles consolation bracket on Saturday. He lost his first round match to Fresno State's Reid DeLaubenfels 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-2 then advanced to the consolation quarterfinals after San Francisco's Richard Bucalem withdrew due to illness. He'll face Pacific's Ben Mirkin.
Toki Sherbakov will also appear in the consolation quarterfinals, facing Stanford's Denis Lin. After falling to Nevada's Andrew Poustie 6-4, 6-2, he defeated Cal's Andrew Scholnick in a 4-6, 7-6(4), 1-0(4) three-set victory.
Freshman Brett Bacharach won his first round match, defeating Stanford's Walker Kehrer 6-3, 7-5 before losing to Santa Clara's Tom Pham 6-4, 6-3. Alec Haley fell to San Francisco's WIll Schumacher 6-1, 6-3 in other Flight A Singles action.
In doubles, Bacharach and Horowicz defeated Neavada's Billy Bumgardner and Nicholas Sextion 8-5 to advance to the Flight B Doubles quarterfinals where they will face the tournament's top-seeded duo in Cal's Nikhil Jayashankar and Wyatt Houghton.
Verdi-Fortin and Miller dropped an 8-4 decision to Saint Mary's Jesse Kiuru and Joakim Norstrom while Adam Levie paired with Sherbakov against Stanford's Jamin Ball and Trey Strobel, the fourth-seeded duo in the tournament. Levie and Sherbakov lost 8-4.
