SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Three UC Davis men's singles players and one doubles team are still alive in the main draws of their respective divisions as the Aggie men's tennis team opened competition on Friday at the UCSB Classic in Santa Barbara.
A total of seven UC Davis players were in action on the first day at the seven-team tournament, competing in a "compass draw" where each player will have the opprtunity to play four singles and three doubles matches.
In Flight A Singles, Toki Sherbakov defeated Nevada's Moez Chargui 7-6 (5), 6-2 and will take on Cal's Gregory Bayane in Saturday's quarterfinals. Kyle Miller faced UCSB's Mbonisi Ndimande to open the tournament and dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision in the same bracket.
Hugo Verdi-Fortin and George Horowitz are still in action in Flight B Singles. Verdi-Fortin claimed a three-set victory over UC San Diego's Kona Luu, losing the first set 6-1 but coming back to claim 6-3 and 6-4 wins in the next two sets. He will take on Benjamin Recknagel of UCSB in the quarterfinals.
Horowitz took on Cal's Stuart Miller, taking a 6-2, 1-0 Ret. win. to advance to the quarterfinals where he will face UCSB's Sasha Gryaznov.
Adam Levie lost a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Northern Arizona's Josh Levinson in Flight C Singles.
Bacharach and Horowitz are the lone Aggie doubles team to advance after defeating a duo out of NAU 8-3. They will face UCSD's Jason Anderson who paired up with UC Davis freshman Adam Levie in the finals of Flight C Doubles after Anderson and Levie won their opening doubles match 8-3.
