DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis head coach Eric Steidlmayer and his veteran men's tennis team will open its spring season on Saturday, Jan. 19, in a 10 a.m. road contest against the Santa Clara Broncos.
With four tournaments of experience already obtained by the team, senior co-captain Toki Sherbakov led a contingent of Aggies that earned five dual victories. Splitting his 10 matches played, Sherbakov's fall included a spot in the top flight consolation bracket final at the Aggie Invitational last October.
Junior Kyle Miller and freshman Brett Bacharach also finished the fall with a team-high five dual victories.
Aggie freshmen and seniors combined efforts to finish their fall schedule as UC Davis' top doubles pairings. Bacharach and senior George Horowitz went 4-3 before the break, freshman Adam Levie and Sherbakov posted a 3-3 mark.
Santa Clara enters Saturday's matchup with three fall tournaments under its belt, competitions that include the Aggie Invitational and the ITA Regional Championships. Both teams are familiar with one another because UC Davis was able to follow the Broncos' in its own tournament, and at Regionals.
Led by nationally-ranked junior John Lamble, who finished the fall with victories in five of his last seven matches for Santa Clara, Lamble advanced to the finals of the ITA's event before falling to No. 16 Ben McLachlan of Cal. Sophomore Ilya Osintsev enters Saturday's contest ranked No. 104 nationally after recording a 4-2 record in the fall.
The Aggies are 0-1 in singles competition against the Broncos; after a valiant effort, Tom Pham fell to Bacharach, 6-4, 6-3 at the Aggie Invitational in the only head-to-head competition involving the two teams. Zero doubles matches between the Aggies and the Broncos took place in the fall.
Following this Saturday's dual, UC Davis will host Sonoma State and Pacific on Saturday, Jan. 25, and Sunday, Jan. 26, respectively. The dual against the Tigers will also serve as the inaugural Big West match of the season for UC Davis.
