DAVIS, Calif. -- Freshman Ivan Thamma scored his first Big West Conference Athlete of the Week award of his career for the competition week of February 12-18, as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.
The San Diego, Calif., native went 3-0 in singles to help his team finish 2-1 over the three-match homestead, winning the duals against Sonoma State, 7-0, and Saint Mary's, 4-1, but falling to Santa Clara with a close score of 4-3.
The first of three singles wins came from his straight-set victory over Sonoma State's Nate Oppenheim, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 1 position. The second came from a straight-set win over Saint Mary's Nash Vollenweider, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 2, while the third came about after defeating Santa Clara's Robert Seby, 6-4, 7-5.
In doubles play, Thamma and partner Everett Maltby went 2-1 at the No. 1 position, defeating Sonoma State's tandem of Oppenheim and Sean Alves, 6-4, and Saint Mary's duo of Vollenweider and Damon Kesaris, 6-1.
The UC Davis men's tennis returns to action this Friday afternoon (Feb. 23) as they prepare for a dual match against No. 2 Stanford at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
