IRVINE, Calif. - By winning both of his matches last weekend, Kyle Miller was recognized by the Big West Conference for his success against Sacramento State by earning Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors as announced Wednesday.
In addition to posting an 8-6 doubles triumph alongside Adam Luba over Sacramento State's Roy Brandys and Niranjan Ram, Miller also claimed a 7-6, 6-4 victory versus Aliaksandr Malko as the Aggies' No. 2 singles player.
The win improved Miller's doubles dual record to 3-1 this season and also helped UC Davis jump out to an early 1-0 lead over the Hornets. Miller's straight-set singles win placed his team one win away from defeating Sacramento State in front of an energetic crowd at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
Were it not for the efforts of Miller, the Aggies would not have stood a chance in snapping the team's seven-match skid against their Causeway rivals as the Pacific Grove, Calif. native was the only UC Davis player to earn victories in both matches played.
Miller is one of 10 student-athletes that will compete in the Aggies' busy weekend of action in San Diego, Calif. He and Luba will face the independent team of Esteban and Isaac Altuna at the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship in La Jolla, Calif. Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
UC Davis will also face Villanova on Sunday, March 3, in a 2 .m. match at the Peninsula Tennis Club in San Diego, Calif., before ending its weekend against Boston College on Monday, March 4, at the Northview Tennis Courts on the campus of UC San Diego in La Jolla, Calif.
